NODA Review
This amazingly hilarous musical opened at the Broadway Theatre in April 2011. An Adaption of the smash hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith.
A story of Deloris Van Cartier a singer diva, who after witnessing her gangster boyfriend murder an employee, she is put under protective custody disguised as a Nun. Finding this "lifestyle" difficult she gets involved with a convent choir and makes friendships never before known to her.
Wow, what a delightful evenings's entertainment, Halifax Light Opera Society must be very proud of their second production of the year. Delores Van Cartier, (Otti Gauvain) the mainstay character of the show was rarely off stage, an absolute sassy first class performer who coped beautifully with the complexities of her character. Her singing, acting and comedy timing skills were spot on.
The interpretation of the Mother Superior, (Marilyn Mitchell) was brilliantly portrayed and showed great authority, she was completely exasperated with the situation of Delores. Her solo "I Haven't Got A Prayer" was sung with feeling, I loved it. Monsignor O' Hara gave an impressive characterisation with warmth, commpassion and comedy. Sister Mary Lazarus, (Brenda Chapel) gave a strong performance and delivered her rapping skills convincingly. Sister Mary Robert, (Francesca Preston) the postulant belted out her songs beautifully.
"Sweaty " Eddie, (Ben Garbett) the policeman who's love interest is Delores, gaved a good portrayal of his role. The Baddies Curtis, (Craig Tucker) and his three henchmen performed the comedy number "Long Black Dress" extremely well.
All the big up-beat production numbers by the Nuns ensemble were excuted delightfully. The excellent Orchestra complimented the production, they did get a little carried away on the first night in the second act but I am sure it will be corrected by tomorrow evening.
This was a slick, fast moving production with everyone working hard both on stage and behind the scenes. Wonderful sparkling finale costumes, one word for this superb production "HALLE-LU-JAH"
